FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says an investigation is underway in a southeast side neighborhood after multiple incidents on Thursday.
Police were initially called for a disturbance and vehicle crash at Turtle Creek and Stardale just before 1 p.m.
On the way, calls for gunfire came in.
The FWPD says that some of those believed to be involved had left the scene. A K-9 team was trying to track them down when they came upon a body in a nearby field that appeared to have gunshot wounds.
Police are trying to piece together whether the incidents are related.
The following was released:
Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Stardale and Turtle Creek on a report of a disturbance. Initial information indicated a dispute among several individuals involving a vehicle. While officers were en route, callers reported that shots had been fired.
Upon arrival, officers learned that some of the involved individuals had fled the area. A K9 track was initiated in an effort to locate them. During the track, officers discovered a body in a field south of the original scene. The individual appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased by medics.
At this time, it has not been confirmed whether the deceased individual is connected to the disturbance.
The Homicide Team, Crime Scene Unit (CSU), and Air Support Unit (ASU) responded to continue the investigation. Detectives are interviewing witnesses to determine what occurred and whether any suspects remain outstanding. CSU is processing the scene and collecting evidence with assistance from ASU.
This investigation is in its preliminary stages and remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
