INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A bill to fund a handgun training program for Hoosier teachers is advancing.
The Indiana House passed the measure 71 to 24 Tuesday, with primarily Republican support.
State law already allows school districts to let teachers be armed, but currently, no training is required.
If this bill passed the Indiana Senate and is signed into law, it would provide voluntary training for armed teachers that would be paid for by the state.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – Republican state lawmakers have a bill that would pay for teachers to get firearm training.
Representative Jim Lucas of Seymour is the bill’s sponsor and tells the House Education Committee that “gun-free zones do not mean it’s a gun-free zone.”
He wants more teachers to be armed in the classroom. Teachers would need 40 hours of training, the same as police officers.
