
Deputy John Durm
UPDATE (July 12, 2023):
MARION CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – The death of Marion County Deputy John Durm is ruled a homicide.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office says Durm died from ligature strangulation.
An arrest report alleges that 34-year-old Orlando Mitchell used handcuffs to strangle Durm on Monday when returning from a hospital visit.
Mitchell is facing preliminary charges of murder, felony murder, robbery, and escape.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – An Indianapolis deputy is dead, allegedly killed by an inmate who was attempting to escape.
Officials say Deputy John Durm was returning from the hospital with Orlando Mitchell when Mitchell allegedly attacked him. The inmate then took control of the prison van but didn’t get very far because he crashed the van outside the jail complex.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case and is waiting for the results of the autopsy before deciding what charges to file against Mitchell.
Mitchell has a history of domestic violence and is awaiting trial for the murder of the mother of his one-year-old son.
